In a Given Moment

In any given moment we know certain truths about ourselves. Who we are and who we want to be. What we know about ourselves can change and it doesn't mean that we were wrong at the time or even lying, we just know more about ourselves in that later moment. There was a time in my life I knew I would never have kids because I wasn't the "right" kind of person to be a mom. There were times that I knew I was going to spend my life with George, or Chris, or Tom. When I was in elementary school, I knew I wanted to be a third grade teacher. By the time I got to high school, I knew I wanted to be a computer engineer. None of these things came to pass, not because I couldn't achieve them, but because I learned more about myself that led me in a different direction. In any of those moments, however, I never would have believed you if you told me I'd be where I am today - a mother of 3, married, living in Florida, a licensed therapist, and about to earn my PhD in counselor education. There is no shame in changing directions and reaching for new dreams. If I hadn't done that, I wouldn't be as happy with my current life. It is important for me to remain grateful for the twists and turns that have occurred in my life and know that what I know now is not the same as what I'll know 5 minutes, 5 hours, 5 days, 5 weeks, or 5 years from now. Where you are now does not have to be your permanent state and likely won't be.
